exchange resources and ideas and support each other
We first met Michael McGuire about three years ago when the active pre-schooler was enrolled in an early intervention program offered through La Salle Easter Seal Society.
Michael had been diagnosed with Fragile X syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects physical,
social and learning development. He now attends first grade in Oglesby
where he charms classmates, teachers and staff in Jamie Salazar’s class
for special needs students.
“He’s doing really well at Oglesby,” said his mother, Michelle. “He’s finally becoming a lot more social. They do
let him go and spend part of the day with the kids that are his own
age. He’ll do part of his day in special needs and then spend another
part of the day in P.E., library, music.”
The McGuires live just south of Tonica but arranged to have Michael attend school in Oglesby
which offers a developmental program for students with special needs.
The program has allowed Michael to really blossom both in his classroom
and on the playground.
