April Autism Awareness: Stories from parents of children with Autism

April was a very busy month as we focused on Autism Awareness. The main thing that I did to support this was to publish stories from parents of children with Autism on the Learning to be Buddies Blog. Make sure you pop over and read their stories. They will touch your heart.

You can find out more about Autism by visiting our Autism Awareness page.

Tell others about your service, event or products through sponsorship at Learn to be Buddies

When I first launched Learn to be Buddies it was all about the series of children’s books and teaching materials I am writing. But then I began to blog and produce printable information sheets for parents and professionals. And now what started out as a bit of a hobby to accompany the Learn to be Buddies Series has grown so much that … well, it’s too big to treat as a hobby any more.

I want to keep providing free information to parents and professionals. But to do this I need your help.

If you have a business, blog, service or event that fits with philosophy of Learn to be Buddies, you now have an opportunity to reach almost 970 Twitterers, over 600 Facebook fans and friends, about 90 blog followers and more than 100 newsletter subscribers by becoming a sponsor of Learn to be Buddies. You can be listed in our link directory, book a spot in our newsletter, share your information by sponsoring an information sheet so it can be made freely available on our website, or take advantage of a one-month feature on our home page and blog.

We have separate pricings for charities and businesses. We also have heavy discounts for early birds. So visit http://www.learn2bebuddies.com.au/pages/becomeasponsor.html for more information and get in early.

A new product

This month I am releasing a new Dave is Brave activity plan called What if they Don't Stop? This is all about teaching children other things they can do to deal with bullying as an alternative to saying, "Stop!" It is based on the concept of the hand diagram, first introduced by Ken Rigby - an Australian academic who has done much important work on the issue of bullying. Visit the Learn to be Buddies Series blog to read more.

The Activity plan includes an article to help parents and teachers understand the different phases of bullying and how to decrease the chances of it escalating to the point of being difficult to stop. I have also designed awards, images, and a social story to help teach children what to do in response to bullying.

I have also developed a video clip and a poster to be used in conjunction with this activity plan. This month these two items will be on sale in our online store.

Helping your child concentrate, remember and follow instructions

This month I will be writing a series of blog posts about what we call executive functioning. This is what helps us to plan ahead, control our impulses, store and retrieve verbal information and adapt to what is going on around us. ADD/ADHD and Autism are amongst the conditions that effect executive functioning. This means that children with these conditions find it hard to follow instructions, learn by listening and control their emotions.

How to help students deal with bullying at school

One of the things I hear from parents whose children are moving from primary to high school is the concern that their child will be bullied. This often has to do with the physical and social difference between the two environments as highlighted in a previous post. This includes fewer teachers to the number of students – which means less supervision, more freedom and responsibility.… Continue

The Dreaded Power Struggle

“Mark, can you sit down and do your work please?”

“No.”

“Mark, sit down please.”

“I don’t want to.”

“Sit down.”

“Why?”

“Because….because you need to do your work.”

“I don’t want to.”…

Half an hour later.

“MARK THOMAS ANTHONY PETERSON! Put your BOTTOM on your SEAT or… or…”

“What are you goin’ #$%#$% do?” You quickly duck out of the way of a flying chair. “I said I don’t want to do it!!”

Angry, you confront him and say “Don’t you throw things at me!”

“I will @#$%@ do what I @%%# wel
