Learn to be Buddies: A series for developing social skills

Here's a short update on what's been happening in the last month, and some links that may interest you.

February

brought us a new distributor. The Toy Bug is now selling Dave is Brave. The Toy Bug is an online business run by a mum of a child who has Autism. She developed this business to share all the great toys she has found to support her son's therapy and learning. There is a wide range of fun stuff, including sensory toys, books, pretend play props and so on. Make sure you pop over and visit The Toy Bug if you are looking for fun and educational toys.

Author Visits and Workshops

Amanda ran a workshop about bullying at Hunter Connect, a support group for families and professionals caring for and educating children with Autism and/or other developmental delays. It was a great night, with lots of discussion. You can read more and download some information about this at http://www.learn2bebuddies.com.au/pages/visits/hunterconnect.html. Amanda also ran an Activity morning at Medowie Playtime. We had lots of fun making balloon faces, masks and making collages on hand cut-outs. Then Amanda read Dave is Brave. After this we sang and did the actions to Be Brave before getting a copy of this song on disk in little party bags. This was a cause of great excitement! To find out more, visit http://www.learn2bebuddies.com.au/pages/medowieplaytime.html

An Information Booklet on Bullying

This month we are releasing a booklet called Bullying in Schools: What Can We Expect?. This is a 19 page, downloadable document written for Australian parents and educators. It looks at the laws, policies and practices established in Australian schools to help protect children from bullying. While the booklet does provide information for parents of children with disabilities, it could be useful for all parents and educators. The contents of the booklet include:
- Introduction (facts and figures)
- Laws, Standards and Policies
- Finding Common Ground: Understanding different perspectives on bullying
- Reporting bullying
- Responding to bullying
- Preventing bulying
- Not satisfied (further contacts)
- Useful websites
- Reference list

This month's featured link is the Author Visits page.

How to help students deal with bullying at school

One of the things I hear from parents whose children are moving from primary to high school is the concern that their child will be bullied. This often has to do with the physical and social difference between the two environments as highlighted in a previous post. This includes fewer teachers to the number of students – which means less supervision, more freedom and responsibility.… Continue

The Dreaded Power Struggle

“Mark, can you sit down and do your work please?”

“No.”

“Mark, sit down please.”

“I don’t want to.”

“Sit down.”

“Why?”

“Because….because you need to do your work.”

“I don’t want to.”…

Half an hour later.

“What are you goin’ #$%#$% do?” You quickly duck out of the way of a flying chair. “I said I don’t want to do it!!”

For teachers or parents supporting children whose behaviour can be challenging

Since bringing up the issue of dealing with aggressive behaviour on my blog I have heard a range of comments from parents, teachers and teachers in training.

Some of the concerns for beginning teachers revolved around the fear of whether they could deal with difficult behaviour in the classroom. Both parents and teachers have asked the question, “How can I make sure I support the child displaying the aggressive behaviour whil… Continue
