Conference on Tourism and Disability in Mozmbique

March 1-3, 2010 I will lead a World Bank-funded conference on how reaching out to the market of travelers with disabilities can help the up-and-coming country of Mozambique build its economy. One of the exciting parts of setting up the conference is learning about amazing destinations like Gorongosa National Park and their desire to be inclusive.

Watch for a new National Geographic film on Gorongosa to come out in 2010 - and a tour for PwD once we get the infrastructure hospitable to us all!

Contribute Your Story to the UN

UNESCAP is currently working on an accessibility handbook that will be used to raise awareness and for capacity building on accessibility. We would like to include true stories of the experiences persons with disabilities face in trying to gain access to public services including physical infrastructures, transportation and information, communication and technology. These stories will be used to illustrate the difficulty many people have with accessing public services and the need for universal… Continue

Scott, I'm sorry I haven't gotten back to you about travel with my son's disability. I have been trying to think of what we do, but I cannot come up with much. Because his disability is not physical, it's more of a talking through what we are doing, where we are going and assuring him that it will be fabulous. He gets anxious in new situations, but once he sees his surroundings, he relaxes a little. Hope that helps. It isn't much. Hope you are enjoying your weekend.

Beth does not like to burden me with the transport chair and so much prefers the scooter. She would not stand for a two person anything . We had been to Kusadasi and did not go to the ruins because we were warned the transport chair would not make it and wondered whether a scooter would. Maybe someone else has been.

I have already contacted Special Needs at Sea and they were helpful. I was concerned with the stability of a 3 wheel and they located a 4 wheeler. We are definitely bringing a transport chair that has seen the Alhambra, the Taj Mahal, the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Khartom, and the cities of the Danube. Some of them would not support a scooter, so I understand the need to have both.

One site I wonder about are the ruins of Ephesis. The ground is so uneven that a transport chair would be impossible. If you are familar with the site, what would you think about a 4 wheel scooter?
