Profile Information

About Me:
Sera Rivers is the Chicopee Special Needs Kids Examiner and writes articles about sepcial education and raising children with learning disabilities. Sera’s creative writing classes at her local YMCA teach adults and teens how to express and market their writing talents in a relaxed atmosphere. In her two years of teaching, several of her students have been published.

Sera wrote the nonfiction manuscript, Diagnosing Parents’ Rights: a mother’s journey to helping her son learn (not yet published). It details the true account of her struggle with professionals who adamantly tried to label her son, Indigo, with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) despite her strong opposition. The struggle between mother and professionals reveals the multitude of evaluations and tests that led to Indigo’s correct diagnosis.

Readers will get an inside look at the life of a real child, a real mother and how they struggled with the baffling symptoms– extreme paranoia, no concept of time, appearance of inattention, incessant talking, and poor fine motor skills. These seemingly unrelated problems are very common symptoms of NLD. However, these symptoms could be misdiagnosed for ADHD by general pediatric practices and educational specialists at first glance. To read an excerpt from the book, click here.

After her struggle with educational professionals, Sera moved to a new town and got involved with the city’s special education professionals. She co-chaired her local Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) for two years where she worked with the Special Education Department and other parents to bring awareness about important issues to families of children with disabilities. In addition, she was the liaison in her son’s school for parents who had questions or concerns regarding their children’s education, the Special Education Department, and SEAC in general.

In addition to Diagnosing Parents’ Rights, Sera has written an eclectic mix of short stories, poems and articles for Southwoods, a literary magazine. She is in the midst of editing her memoir Don’t You Want Me? (not yet published).
